death battles in anime are much easier to scale with characters that have some sort of supernatural abilities because some abilities are clearly superior to others... but it's different for the case of swordsmen or samurai
their skill cannot easily be quantified based on just abilities alone but factors like prowess, personality, sword handling skill, speed, and efficiency are also necessary to determine who will win in a death battle.
I don't want to go into too much detail but the sword style of these fighters may appear a bit reckless but beautiful at the same time. they both have a unique way of handling their martial art that is pleasing to the eye. this alone put them above most characters that just shoot laser beams from their swords.
now that I've paid my respects to both of these great characters. I'll state the fact simply;
it would be an absolute victory for Afro
well... it's simple afro samurai is just better than Mugen, I'm not trying to downplay any of Mugen's feats but it is just that afro is far more skilled.
afro held the title of number two searching for the number one so they could battle. he constantly fought against multiple people who chased after his head. he is even fast enough to cut a bullet shot at him from behind while simultaneously fighting over twenty opponents.
Mugen on the other hand has incredible swordplay probably more unique than most anime if not all. but he is simply lacking in reaction time and speed when compared to afro samurai.
afro samurai held the number two title for almost all the series then later defeated the number one. meaning that he is probably the strongest or the second strongest character in his series. meanwhile, Mugen has been bested on multiple occasions by other characters.
this just proves Afro's superiority.
