ok... I've heard so many facts and theories on which of these characters is the smartest. while I'm sure that there are much more smarter characters in anime than both of them, these two were rye most phenomenal and they showed us what it means for an anime character to be smart.
if you look at the life of the two students there's one thing that is very common and that is their academic excellence; their ability to understand and retain information is excellent and it was evident that none of their mates could hold a candle to how brilliant they were, at least in the case of Lelouche.
while it is possible to analyze the characters it is not entirely possible to say for a fact that one character is smarter than the other... hear me out. but it is possible to look at their accomplishment and the errors they made along the way.
one thing about these characters is that they both had weaknesses. those weaknesses acted as a form of hindrance to whatever they were trying to achieve. in Lelouch's case, it's his care for his loved ones, especially his sister, and in Light's case, it was his ego. yes... I'll explain.
On many occasions, lelouche would have to go out of his way to help his loved one which had in turn put him in certain difficult positions. while in the case of Light, his ego would make him accept certain challenges. this is true because while Lelouche was trying to rule an empire, Light wanted to keep the image of a god.
Now, who is smarter; about my previous point on the inability to accurately decide who was smarter they are one clear piece of evidence. they both achieved their goals and died as a result; lelouche died as a sacrifice for peace while Light died while trying to kill his enemies.
Therefore it can be deduced that lelouche is smarter.
some might argue that light has a far more challenging opponent than Lelouche but that is not entirely true as lelouche had his brother 'Schneizel el Brittania who was the only person lelouche could not beat in chess.
Again... it's a fact that Light was not the smartest person in the series. because things began to get difficult for him when his opponent got the book which he used. L was... at least to an extent, smarter than Light. he already knew the identity of Kira but needed proof. such a sad ending for both of them.
